For the first time China has realized 3D printing of key parts of fusion reactor

According to the journal of science and technology, Chinese academy of sciences hefei institute of material science and nuclear safety so China neutron irradiation resistant steel (i.e., "CLAM steel") as raw material, using 3D printing technology to realize fusion of key parts, the first wall cladding sample trial production, and the organization and performance are analyzed, relevant results recently published in the international journal of nuclear materials the proceedings of nuclear physics.

3D printing technology can realize the integration of complex structure, which has the characteristics of short manufacturing period and high material utilization, and is an important method for complex component manufacturing.Researchers to CLAM steel as the raw material, through 3D printing technology to carry out the fusion of cladding parts manufacture, to explore the technology in the fusion of advanced nuclear energy system components manufacturing feasibility, to promote the rapid development of advanced nuclear energy system complex components and performance optimization, and promote its engineering application.

After a large number of experiments, the researchers first realized the 3D printing and forming of the first wall anti-neutron irradiated steel sample.The results show that the size accuracy of the sample meets the design requirements, and the density of the material reaches 99.7%, which is equivalent to the CLAM steel produced by the traditional method.At the same time, the study also found that 3D printing step by step a melt and directional solidification characteristics led to the differences in the CLAM steel organization and performance of different directions, the difference in the future by scanning scheme optimization and molten pool can effectively reduce or even eliminate nucleation optimization way.
