Most 3D printing technologies can create FGM in one way or another.FDM 3D printing technology can fuse a variety of polymers to form a multi-layer extrusion system.To demonstrate the possibility of this approach, Michelin recently combined different polymers to produce advanced concept tyres, which have very different elasticity in their entire structure.However, this approach is still limited in size and speed.The demand for mass production means that the FDM is still limited to production prototypes.

More advanced 3D printing technology - direct metal deposition (DMD) can produce metal-metal and metal-ceramic FGM composites with near-continuous gradients.The disadvantage of this approach is that it is expensive and time-consuming.The technology itself costs a lot, buying and maintaining, each of which must be one at a time.Material waste is another serious problem, preventing DMD from getting more implementation, and the waste rate is about 70%.
