The New Design Of The 3D Print Needle Is Inspired By The Sting Of Bees.

The shape of the bee sting fits perfectly with the researchers' attempts to use their new pin design because they wanted to create instruments that would reduce tissue damage and improve accuracy.Inspired by the sting of a bee, they developed a design that bore small marks or barbs on the needle.These barbs will reduce the insertion and pulling force of the needle, which will further reduce tissue damage.

"In general, surgical needles are bent when they are inserted into an organization due to its sophisticated design," Hutapea said."Needle in the course of deviating from the target plan paths, such as cancers or tumors, with this shape, the curve is limited - it's easier to control the robot set, this is key, because if the needle curve, you missed the target."

The next phase of the project is to focus on the best way to implement the materials needed for the design.The prototype USES a polymer mixture, but the final needle needs to be 3D printed with metal.The researchers believe that metal 3D printing is not yet up to the level they want because they require metal needles to have submillimeter dimensions and high aspect ratios.

"At the same time, we are currently working on a compromise solution through research and development of hybrid metal polymer needles," Hutapea said."Hopefully within two or three years, we have this technology."

Their goal is to eventually 3D print the needles so they can be used in surgical practice.The FDA approved a long road, but eventually they could see their bee heuristic needles in clinical applications to improve minimally invasive procedures.

Two engineers in Minimally Invasive Therapy and Allied Technologies, Bioinspiration&Biomimetics on published articles about their surgical needles design project.They will display their work at the Temple's Franklin Institute as part of the temporary 3D printing exhibition.
