Using 3D Printing And AI Technology, Abandoned Prisons Have Created An Organic Park.
Apr 17, 2018

The development of 3D printing technology has been increasingly used to solve some architectural and design problems.Building research institute at the university of southern California (SCI - Arc) students using 3D printing technology combined with some new technologies, aimed at an abandoned prison renovation of design in Los Angeles, hope the building according to the new USES can be reused.

This new design plan is from the institute of the university of southern California's building construction technology professional master, south more architectural institute of technology professional master's program last year, and last year officially open, committed to teaching and research and development in the construction field will be some cutting-edge technology combined with each other, and applied to the construction of the key link in the application, including 3D printing technology.Students hope to use 3D printing to create a unique new structure, while designing a "self-growing" botanical garden controlled by AI technology.

The prison building was part of the Lincoln heights prison and closed in 1965.Since then, the prison has been transformed into a theater, with many videos and horror films being used as filming scenes. Now, management hopes from the Angle of architectural aesthetics completely redesigned and redevelopment of the prison, the introduction of a large number of emerging technologies, and new ways to develop and utilize a lot of space here, so as to create more value for the society. The researchers, led by Marcelo Spina and Casey Rehm, hope to fully explore the potential of the abandoned building complex.Beside at the same time, according to the volume of a prison and the Los Angeles river and the location of a public school, bring the social and natural environment around, and hope to be able to in the reconstruction for the application of many advanced technology breakthrough.

The early work of this project is to carry out in-depth exploration and research on prison buildings and surrounding areas. In order to finish the work, SCI - Arc the students use the five robot, an unmanned aerial vehicle (uav), a laser positioning radar (LIDAR), and artificial intelligence technology, finished the detection work, design team start comprehensive renovation design for it.

The 3D printing technology is used in the project to complete the "digital process aesthetics", which is designed by Arsenios Zachariadis and Hsiao Chiao Peng.First, the 2D prison building sketches are scanned, then 3D digital technology is used to model and print.Under the new model, the building structure of the prison is proposed to use 3D printing technology to reconstruct the design, so as to achieve the transformation of the original space and design. At the same time, the new design also has the characteristics of abstract aesthetics.

Another very creative idea in this project is to implant the entire prison building into a "self-growing" plant, transforming the prison into an autonomous organic park. The green plants will be controlled by AI technology to balance the "tropical rainforest and luxurious plant park".This part of the project, Sunhita Vartak and Burcin Nalinci, named it "Biophilia".
